Why Ubuntu Exists
Ubuntu Health & Wellness Society was founded on a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves access to culturally grounded spaces where they can heal, grow, and thrive.
For too long, African Nova Scotian individuals and families have faced barriers to accessing health and wellness supports that recognize their history, culture, lived experiences, and strengths. While many services exist, they are often not designed with our communities at the centre.
Ubuntu was created to bridge that gap.
Our approach recognizes that wellness is about more than physical health. It includes mental and emotional wellbeing, cultural identity, connection, family, community, and hope. By creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and understood, we can help individuals and families build resilience while strengthening the wellbeing of our communities.
Why Now
The need has never been greater.
Communities continue to experience the lasting effects of racism, economic inequities, social isolation, trauma, housing instability, food insecurity, and growing mental health challenges. Families are searching for trusted spaces where they can find support before challenges become crises.
At the same time, there is a growing recognition across Nova Scotia that culturally responsive and community-led solutions are essential to improving health outcomes.
Ubuntu was established to meet this moment.
By investing in prevention, connection, and culturally grounded programming today, we can reduce barriers, strengthen families, and build healthier communities for generations to come.
Why This Matters
Healthy communities are built when people have opportunities to heal, connect, and belong.
When parents are supported, children benefit. When young people have positive mentors, they are more likely to thrive. When Elders share knowledge, culture is strengthened. When individuals feel connected rather than isolated, communities become healthier and more resilient.
An investment in Ubuntu is an investment in people.
It is an investment in dignity, hope, leadership, and the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to live well.
Together, we are not simply funding programs—we are helping to build a stronger, healthier future for African Nova Scotian communities.

Ubuntu was founded because we believe every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and supported in a community that honors their identity, culture, and potential. Healing is not something we do alone—it is something we build together.
Building a stronger, healthier future for our communities starts with collective care.
